SMCM is the first U.S. institution of higher education to establish a memorandum of understanding with the University of The Gambia (UTG). In 2003, the first cohort of SMCM students studied at the UTGThe PEACE Program logo, while current director, Bill Roberts, carried out research supported by a Fulbright research grant on the Gambian media and efforts to promote peace within the country. That summer, the first Gambian UTG student came to St. Mary’s for a summer field study program in archaeology at Historic St. Mary’s City. Since the fall semester 2007, the PEACE program has provided a scholarship for a UTG student to study at SMCM every semester.

THE PEACE PROGRAM VISION
To sustain educational and cultural exchange that promotes understanding and friendship as the basis for collaborative research, advocacy, and activism among individuals, organizations, communities and nations in the pursuit of peace and development of democracy.

MISSION STATEMENT
To expand the exchange of SMCM and other non-Gambian students, faculty and staff with the UTG and other educational institutions in The Gambia and Senegal as a means of increasing understanding and enhancing academic excellence among all partners.
